100s of Muslim mobs continued the rampage inside a Buddhist-majority village in southeastern Bangladesh following an alleged desecration of Muslim holy book of Quran on social networking Facebook.

"About one 1000 angry mobs vandalised and hang ablaze a minimum of 13 Buddhist houses and five temples in Merunloa village in Cox's Bazar district," Faruk Ahmed, a senior officer, told Xinhua from Cox's Bazar district, some 391 km southeast of capital Dhaka.

"The Facebook account holder, Uttom Kumar Barua, within the village in Cox's Bazar's Ramu subdistrict has had a photograph of trampling around the holy Quran and submitted it from his Facebook account," he stated.

Ahmed stated following the news concerning the defaming picture spread, 100s of Muslims, who have been already angry on the US-made anti-Islam film, required towards the street on Saturday evening.

Protesters released attacks around the houses and also the temples prior to the law enforcers arrived at the scene to create situation in check within the wee hrs of Sunday, he stated.

Based on the police official, Barua and the family go into hiding.


Ahmed stated that nobody was hurt within the violence which survived for many hrs.

"Everything is now completely in check," stated Selim Md Jahangir, the district's police chief.

He stated safety measures happen to be beefed in the village and law enforcers are protecting all of the Buddhist temples to avoid further untoward incident.

Bangladesh's Home Minister Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir and Industries Minister Dilip Barua have previously visited the website from the attack.

The violence over anti-Islam picture on Facebook has spread to Cox's Bazar's adjacent Chittagong district, as miscreants vandalized two more Buddhist temples inside a village on Sunday morning.

The district's police Chief ZA Morshed told Xinhua, "We've tightended safety measures after miscreants vandalized two temples."
